ER Letter For June 2009

Have you seen it? I have and I use it all the time. I’m talking about our new website, www.hpelks.com  The website provides the most up to date information about what is going on at the Lodge. Our monthly newsletter only covers a small snapshot of the activities we offer and is published several weeks ahead of time. With pool season upon us, I suggest you visit the website often to keep up with the happenings at the Lodge. If you see Stewart McGlaughlin or Mark Anthony, be sure to thank them for their efforts. To post anything on our website, send the information to the Lodge Office and we will work on getting it posted.

Your Lodge Officers attended the NC State Elks Spring Convention in Asheville. At the convention, your Ladies Auxiliary did a fantastic job entertaining all of the spouses from across the state during our business meeting. We received an award for reaching our goal for the Elks National Foundation set by the Grand Exalted Ruler. You may recall pledging $10 a year when you were initiated as an Elk. If your pledge has expired, now would be a good time to sign up again. You can sign up at the Lodge office or online at www.elks.org

As I write this letter the pool is about half full (being an optimist!) and I can feel the Lodge about to come alive with activity. All of the repairs to the drains have been completed and we are down to the last few workdays so the pool can open on May 22. Our website will have the most up to date schedules for volleyball, swim team practice and swim meet schedules. Make sure you give all the Pool Committee members a big thank you for all their efforts to get the pool open on time.

Our Swim Team has 3 home swim meets during June. We swim against Hamilton Lakes, Greensboro Elks, and Greensboro Country Club. Swim meets require a lot of volunteers to run. Contact any of the committee members to volunteer. They need timers, clerks of course, concession workers and grill workers. These are great events for our kids and can’t run without your help.

We will have our own Vern, Tuck and Stormin’ Norman play in our Lounge on June 6th for our Band and Breakfast Night. Vern and the guys will play all of your favorites and at 11:00pm our House Committee will serve a breakfast buffet to chase away those late night munchies. This event is always a great hit.

Our Karaoke Nights in the Lounge have been a big success. If you inner Idol needs to come out, June 13th is the night to do it. We have all the equipment and our own DJ Gunny (Tom Day) to play the songs you want to sing. I hear rumors of members planning and even practicing the songs they are going to sing. Pictures have been taken during the performances and new house lights have been added to our dance floor. So come on out and get in the mix.

Your Lodge Officers will be performing the annual Flag Day ritual by the pool on Sunday, June 14th. “The purpose of this service is to honor our country’s Flag, to celebrate the anniversary of its birth, and to recall the achievements attained beneath its folds. It is quite appropriate that such a service should be held by the Order of Elks, an organization that is distinctively American, intensely patriotic and without counterpart.” We will display all versions of our flag from early history to the current version during the ritual.

Our House Committee is planning a members appreciation night on June 17. A big Italian feast is planned for all members and allows for good fellowship on a night when we don’t have a Lodge meeting. I invite all members to come and see what goes on inside the Lodge and get to know other Elks.

Our annual Mothers Day Buffet was such a big success that, our caterer, Above and Beyond Catering, will be pulling out all the stops for our fathers on Fathers Day. This is a new event for the Lodge. Other events still in the planning stage are Steak and Salmon Night and Drive in Movie Night. Look for more details on our website as they become finalized.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Lodge.

Sincerely and Fraternally,
Scott Webster, Exalted Ruler
High Point Elks Lodge #1155
