ER Letter for May 2009

May is always a busy month at the Lodge. This year it starts with our Kentucky Derby party that has a fancy hat contest and ends with a bang as the pool opens. In addition, the Lounge will be showing the big double header of the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca- Cola 600 races Memorial Day weekend.

May is also the time for your Lodge Officers to attend the Spring Convention in Asheville. At the convention, your Ladies Auxiliary entertains all of the spouses from across the state during our business meeting. Our Ladies go all out and do a fantastic job. They do such a good job that they have been asked to host the event again. All Elks are welcome to attend the Convention. Attending a convention is a great way to see how Elkdom operates across the state and to meet members from other Lodges within our state. Our Grand Exalted Ruler attends our fall convention every year.

Our Spring Fling Carnival and Taste of The Elks Day on April 4th was a huge success. The Ladies Auxiliary did a great job putting on the Spring Fling for the kids and our Taste of the Elks brought out many of our Elk chefs. These events will sure to be even bigger next year.

We have one of our biggest community activities on May 9th. The High Point Elks Lodge is helping sponsor the 6th Annual High Point Little League Family Day. We will help cook hamburgers and hot dogs for about 1100 people. This event usually needs 20-30 volunteers to setup, cook, serve, and breakdown on that Saturday. We cook at the Johnson Street baseball complex starting at 7:30 am and finish up by 2:00 pm. Come for the day or any part of the day you can attend. Please sign up in the Lounge, call the Lodge Office, or contact Tom Adams or Ronnie Lassiter. This is a great way to meet other Elks and show off your Elk pride.

May 10 we will have our annual Mothers Day Buffet. Our Caterer, Above and Beyond Catering will be pulling out all the stops for our Mothers. As an added benefit, our Lodge Officers will be performing the Mothers Day ritual for all present. This is always a great event. Look for further details and menu in this bulletin.

Your new Lodge website is partially up and running. With the help of Stewart McGlaughlin and Mark Anthony, our calendars, birthdays and event photos are now online. Check out the site at www.hpelks.com. If you want to post anything on our website, send the information to the Lodge Office and we will work on getting it posted.

Our weekly Family Burger Nights on Thursdays will continue until the pool opens. Just because we call them burger nights does not mean we only serve burgers. All items are available from our menu if burgers are not your style. The menu changes from time to time, so come on up and try some of our other items.

The pool season is just a few weeks away. If you have been to the Lodge recently, you may have noticed the pool is empty. You can see pictures on our website www.hpelks.com. We have been pressure washing the pool and making some minor surface repairs. We will also make some major changes to the drains in both pools in order to have the facility conform to recent federal code changes. These changes must be completed before we can open the pool. We fully expect the changes to be complete by opening day, which is May 22. The pool committee is working hard on this project and will schedule several workdays and will be calling on volunteers to get the pool in great shape for the season.

Looking ahead we will have our own Vern, Tuck and Stormin’ Norman play in our Lounge on June 6th for our Band and Breakfast night. Vern and the guys will play all of your favorites and at 11:00pm our House Committee will serve a breakfast buffet to chase away those late night munchies. This event is always a great hit.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Lodge.

Sincerely and Fraternally,
Scott Webster, Exalted Ruler
High Point Elks Lodge #1155
