ER Letter For July 2009

As I write this letter, pool season is in full swing and school is out for the summer. The Pool Committee has done a great job getting the pool open for the season. Almost all of our Lodge activities take place around the pool during the summer months. Our Swim Team has started practice; the Junior Elk swim program is about to begin and our Volleyball League has started playing. I hope you and your families take full advantage of this wonderful facility while it is open and participate in our programs.

Our Swim Team has about 150 swimmers on the team this year. Due to our excellent finish in the city meet last year we are swimming against the most competitive teams in the league this year. We will be very active with this program until the city meet July 9-11th. During our home meets we close the pool early to prepare for the meet. We can always use volunteers to help run the meets and you don’t need to have a swimmer on the team in order to help out. Just sign up at the pool so they know where you are able and willing to help. Some of our best support comes from our corporate sponsors. Our sponsors are listed on the Swim Team page of our website, www.hpelks.com. Our corporate sponsors help offset the cost of trophies, ribbons and concessions. Please use and support our sponsors.

Your Lodge Officers performed the annual Flag Day ritual by the pool on Sunday, June 14th. The Elks recently updated the ritual to include Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Our annual ritual was made special with Carroll Moseley singing the Star Spangled Banner and our Lodge Esquire, Steven Hall, a veteran of the Afghanistan war, reading the response. I also want to thank the Boy Scouts of Troop 42 for displaying the historical versions of the flag. Of course, we could not have flown the flag without Tom Day repairing the flagpole by the pool.

During the months of July and August we change our Lodge Meetings to only the fourth Wednesday of the month. We have been busy with the initiation of over 60 new members.

July 4th is our biggest pool party of the season. There will be activities for all members during the day. The Ladies Auxiliary plays a big part in planning and organizing all the fun activities for the kids. Our “Old Guard” will be starting the grills and cooking hamburgers and hot dogs all day. There also will be some adult beverages being sold. Plan on getting to the pool early and plan on bringing a chair. The line starts early to get the best seats. Check our website, www.hpelks.com for the latest details.

Our House Committee is planning a member appreciation night on July 15th. They are planning on grilling London Broil with all the fixings. I invite all members to come and see what goes on inside the Lodge and get to know other Elks.

We also have the return engagement of Hydroplane. They play all your rock favorites from the 70′ to the 90’s. They were such a hit with the members in May that they were asked to come back. Mark your calendar for this special event which will take place on July 17th in the Members Lounge.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Lodge.

Sincerely and Fraternally,
Scott Webster, Exalted Ruler
High Point Elks Lodge #1155
