Exalted Ruler Letter for February 2020

Hello Members and Friends,

I hope everyone’s new year is off to a wonderful start, and is full of potential and promise for you and your family. We are looking forward to a great 2020 at the High Point Elks Lodge with lots of activities for our members, their families and of course supporting our Veterans and community as a whole. I hope all of our members can find some time and/or a way to use their gifts and talents to help with any number of projects or events that we have as Elks. Remember our mottos: Elks Care/Elks Share, and Service Before Self, I hope every Elk will live by those for 2020 and beyond.

January is the start of new calendar year, however it is not the start of the new Elk Year—that is on April 1st. So in February and March we will be working hard to put together our various committees to help continue the amazing reputation we have within High Point. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Lodge Officer, a Committee chairperson, a committee member or a volunteer at any level, please contact either myself at 336-971-3917 or the Lodge Office at 336-869-7313. Also, further down in the newsletter are the names of the current Committees our lodge has and the respective Chairperson. Please feel free to reach out to them for more info or if you have any questions about a particular function of our Lodge.

We have had another busy month at the #1155 and we rang in the New Year with a great NYE Party and Band! A big thanks to our House Committee for making this event such a fun success for everyone to enjoy. The next morning we had our traditional Pajama party and breakfast that led right into some great College Bowl games for people to watch on one of our many big screen TV’s. We also had our 2nd of 4 PER steak nights, so that means we only have 2 left—don’t miss out!! They are on the first Friday of February and March and you need to RSVP by calling the office. Continuing on in January, we had a great turnout for our annual Elks Hoop Shoot at the Hartley Drive YMCA—and a big thanks to them for working with us to host this event. I think, as the movie line goes, “this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship”. We look forward to teaming with the Y for future events, and thanks to Bob Gold for heading up this event and reaching out to the Y on our behalf. The January weekends were also full of NFL playoff games, most which were instant classics, which leads us up to our first big happening in February—our Super Bowl Party!! Come out and enjoy the big game with all your fellow Elks and bring some friends (remember to sign them in please!)—we will have food, drink specials and every TV will be showing the game. More info on this can be found below in the newsletter. January also saw another enjoyable and fun Music Trivia night that was run by Game Show host extraordinaire Stewart McGlaughlin. We had a lot of laughs, heard some great music and had one of the closest finishes that I can recall, and it’s a reminder that your team better bring it’s “A” game to these Music Trivia nights, as missing even one shot at getting points could cost you! I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the great job done by Mike Cockerham who does his “Mikes Famous Wings” on Sundays for us and all those who help make our Thursday night “Family Burger/Grille nights” possible. Both will continue thru the winter season until our pool opens in late May.

February is shaping up to be another fun month….we have the aforementioned Super Bowl party and PER Steak night, the NASCAR season kicks off with the Daytona 500, not one but TWO band nights (one is during Valentine’s weekend and would make a nice gift for that someone special), our PER reverse raffle (tickets are still available—contact the office if you would like a shot at winning some $$), VA hospital visit, Mardi-Gras night, and we have been asked once again to host the NC Elks Leadership seminar after the great job we did last year. This is a big feather in our cap and I’m proud of the effort everyone has put in and is putting in to make this happen. Well done #1155!!!
